The FIA Formula 2 Championship has introduced the F2 2024 car to global media at Monza’s Formula 1 paddock on August 31st, Thursday.
The primary objective behind the new car’s design, scheduled for use in the 2024, 2025, and 2026 seasons, is to provide aspiring Formula 1 drivers with optimal readiness by mirroring an F1 car’s safety, aesthetics, systems, performance, eco-friendliness, and accessibility, all within reasonable budget constraints. Notably, the car’s nose, front and rear wings, and underbody are fashioned to promote competitive wheel-to-wheel racing, promising exciting on-track spectacles.
Leveraging the latest safety advancements from FIA, the F2 2024 car boasts a 3.4-liter turbocharged Mecachrome engine, with adaptations to accommodate the forthcoming Aramco synthetic sustainable fuel set for debut in 2025. The 2024 season will continue to rely on Aramco’s 55% bio-sourced sustainable fuel, which saw successful integration in 2023.
F2 consistently delivers excellent racing and acts as an important training ground for future members of the Formula 1 grid, and by bringing the design philosophies of the two cars closer together we will support this development further. The new F2 car is also an important symbol for our sustainability journey as the series continues to pioneer advanced sustainable fuel which will become a part of F1 from 2026. I want to pay tribute to Bruno and his team as well as the FIA for our continued strong collaboration in this category. I can’t wait to see the car on track next season.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1
A successful preliminary run took place in July at Varano, with former F2 driver Tatiana Calderon behind the wheel. Post the recent unveiling, ongoing developmental trials are scheduled throughout the year, involving several drivers including 2022 FIA Formula 2 Champion Felipe Drugovich. These trials aim to amass adequate mileage for reliability prior to team deployment, with continuous refinement ongoing through 2024, 2025, and 2026, as the sustainable fuel component increases towards the target of 100% synthetic sustainable fuels by 2027.
To ensure inclusivity, the F2 2024 adheres to the FIA’s 2024 specifications in terms of braking, steering feel, and driver comfort, enabling a wide range of drivers to participate and promoting accessibility in the championship. The car’s functionalities encompass familiar features such as Virtual Safety Car (VSC) protocols and optimized Drag Reduction System (DRS), with enhanced electronics via a new Marelli Vehicle Control Unit (VCU).
The initial car will be delivered to teams by the close of December 2023, followed by the second car in mid-January 2024. Before the inaugural official pre-season test, each team will conduct a preliminary shakedown with one car.
