NASA is gearing up for an extraordinary crewed mission to the moon, marking the first of its kind since the historic Apollo 17 voyage in 1972. In a move that exudes both innovation and style, Axiom Space, the company selected by NASA to create cutting-edge Extravehicular Activity Services (xEVAS) spacesuits for the 2025 Artemis III mission, has announced a unique partnership with the renowned Italian luxury brand Prada to design these spacesuits.
This collaboration will see Axiom Space and Prada working closely together throughout the entire production process. Axiom Space’s CEO, Michael Suffredini, expressed enthusiasm for the venture, noting, “Prada’s technical expertise in raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies crucial for ensuring not only the astronauts’ comfort on the lunar surface but also addressing vital human factors considerations that have been lacking in traditional spacesuit designs.”
Lorenzo Bertelli, the marketing director of Prada Group, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This collaboration is a true celebration of human creativity and innovation, driving progress in our civilization.” He also attributed the company’s “cutting-edge” capabilities to its extensive experience, including its involvement with the Luna Rossa Prada sailing team.
The Artemis III mission is noteworthy not only due to the five-decade gap since Apollo 17 but also because it marks the first instance where a woman and a person of colour will set foot on the moon. Astronauts Christina Koch and Victor Glover will play pivotal roles in this historic mission. Notably, Axiom Space’s announcement places emphasis on Christina Koch’s involvement, hinting at the significance of having a woman, particularly a highly accomplished and experienced astronaut, as a key part of the mission. This underlines the evolving dynamics and inclusivity of space exploration, as well as the unique blend of technology and fashion that will shape the future of lunar exploration.
