The Rimac Nevera, an electric hypercar renowned for its exceptional speed, boasts 1,194 horsepower, a staggering top speed of 256 MPH, and acceleration rivalling Formula 1 cars. Priced at $2.1 million, the Nevera has continually broken world records, prompting its creators to explore innovative challenges. Recently, it secured the Guinness World Record for the “fastest speed in reverse,” reaching an impressive 171.34 MPH.
Matija Renić, Nevera’s chief program engineer, disclosed that the idea for this unconventional feat originated as a joke during the hypercar’s development. Despite initial scepticism due to the car’s cooling, stability systems, and aerodynamics not being optimized for high-speed reverse driving, the team found the prospect intriguing.
Simulations hinted at a reverse speed exceeding 150 MPH, but the stability of the Nevera remained untested in such conditions, marking uncharted territory. Multiple videos now demonstrate the hypercar’s capability in this unusual endeavour. Record-setting test driver Goran Drndak admitted that executing the stunt required some adjustment.
He described the experience of facing straight out backwards, with the scenery rapidly receding and a neck-pulling sensation similar to heavy braking. Drndak emphasized the need for gentle steering to maintain balance, all while monitoring the course through the rear-view mirror and keeping an eye on the speed. Despite being “almost completely unnatural” to the car’s design, Drndak affirmed that the Nevera effortlessly handled the stress test.
With numerous records under its belt, the Rimac Nevera continues to push boundaries, leaving enthusiasts intrigued about its next remarkable achievement.
