Make a mental to-do list in the morning
Learning coach Jim Kwik shares his top three brain optimization tips for founders. In the morning, refrain from interacting with your phone for the initial 30 minutes of the day if possible. By picking up your phone right away, you set your brain on a course for distraction. Capitalize on this relaxed and highly suggestible state upon waking by engaging in a brief one-minute visualization exercise. Envision yourself at the day’s end, reflecting with satisfaction, “It was such a wonderful day. I crushed it.” Identify three personal and three professional accomplishments that, if completed, would define your day as a success.
Take a break during lunch
At lunchtime, make a deliberate break to eat without simultaneously working. This action induces what is known as a parasympathetic state, the part of the nervous system associated with rest and digestion. Contrary to the sympathetic nervous system, which triggers the body’s fight-or-flight response, the parasympathetic state is more conducive to replenishing your energy.
Read fiction before sleeping
Before bedtime, opt for fiction over nonfiction reading, reserving the latter for morning or afternoon sessions. Avoid engaging your executive brain at night, as nonfiction tends to stimulate analytical thinking. Fiction, on the other hand, enhances your emotional quotient, fostering greater empathy and allowing you to explore diverse perspectives and problem-solving through narrative. As suggested, “Read some light fiction before going to bed.”
