Google is known for its plethora of products with varying names and functions, often causing confusion among users. However, in the realm of AI, there’s one name that’s taking precedence: Gemini.
The company recently announced the rebranding of its Bard chatbot to Gemini, along with the launch of a dedicated Gemini app for Android. Additionally, all AI features previously under Google Workspace’s Duet AI are now integrated into the Gemini brand. Google has also unveiled Gemini Ultra 1.0, its most advanced language model, available to the public.
Gemini’s mobile apps will be the primary interface for users. On Android, the new app can replace Google Assistant as the default assistant, responding to commands like “Hey Google.” While Google isn’t eliminating Assistant entirely, it’s clear that Gemini is positioned as the future. Sissie Hsiao, in charge of Bard (now Gemini) at Google, sees it as a crucial step towards creating a comprehensive AI assistant that’s conversational, multimodal, and highly helpful.
For iOS users, there’s no dedicated Gemini app, but all AI features will be accessible through the Google app. Google is signalling Gemini’s importance by introducing a toggle in the app to switch between Search and Gemini.
The rebranding extends beyond chatbots; Google Workspace’s Duet AI features, previously known as “Duet AI,” are now part of Gemini. These features assist users in tasks like drafting emails and organizing documents.
Most users will use the standard Gemini model, Gemini Pro. The more powerful Gemini Ultra is available through a Gemini Advanced subscription, part of the new $20-a-month Google One AI Premium plan. This subscription includes 2TB of Google Drive storage and other Google One features.
Gemini Ultra offers enhanced capabilities, allowing for longer conversations and better performance in complex tasks like coding and logical reasoning.
Google’s focus on Gemini underscores its commitment to AI. As it competes with other AI giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, Google aims to establish Gemini as a leading AI platform.
While Google’s history with singular bets, like Google Plus, has been mixed, its dedication to AI suggests that Gemini may become as integral to Google as its core products.
