A 119-metre superyacht, reportedly commissioned by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, has officially launched in Amsterdam. The vessel, named Project 821, is said to be the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht, with an asking price of €600 million ($647 million).
According to a press release by Dutch shipbuilder Feadship, the launch of Project 821 marks a significant moment in yachting history: “When the drydock doors slid open on 4 May at Feadship’s Amsterdam shipyard, the yachting world was forever changed. Say hello to Project 821, the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht.”
Project 821 is powered entirely by green hydrogen, stored in a 92-square-metre double-walled cryogenic fuel tank. Feadship highlights the challenges of storing hydrogen, noting that it requires significantly more space than diesel fuel.
The development of Project 821 required the establishment of new systems, protocols, and safety regulations in collaboration with the classification society Lloyd’s Register. Feadship also mentions that the technology developed for this superyacht will be utilized in hydrogen-powered ferries ordered by Norwegian company Torghatten Nord.
However, Feadship acknowledges the limitations of hydrogen storage for longer journeys, stating that electricity will be generated by generators burning hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) when pure hydrogen is unavailable. The vessel’s 16 fuel cells can provide a week’s worth of silent operation or emission-free navigation at 10 knots.
Despite its advanced technology, Project 821 also offers versatility in fuel sources, with the ability to convert methanol into hydrogen onboard. However, this process emits CO2. Feadship’s director, Jan-Bart Verkuyl, emphasizes the importance of fuel cells for the future of yachting due to their efficiency and low emissions.
Superyacht broker Edmiston will oversee the private sale of Project 821, described by CEO Jamie Edmiston as “the greenest and most environmentally advanced yacht ever built.” The vessel boasts luxurious amenities, including an owner’s apartment, gym, multiple offices, and private lifestyle destinations on each deck level.
With five decks above the waterline and two below, Project 821 features a swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room, and 14 hidden balconies. The vessel also includes an onboard hospital, private cinema, semi-submerged lounge, and accommodations for up to 30 guests and 44 crew members.
