On Tuesday, Alphabet (GOOGL.O), the parent company of Google, announced a series of artificial intelligence enhancements at its annual I/O developer event in Mountain View, California. CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that AI Overviews, a feature that has undergone extensive public testing since last year, is now available to all users in the U.S.
These AI capabilities, demonstrated on Tuesday, are pivotal as Alphabet contends with Microsoft (MSFT.O), OpenAI, and other tech giants to lead in the AI sector. Google has also upgraded its Gemini Pro 1.5 model, which now can process up to 2 million tokens. This advancement doubles its previous capacity, enabling it to analyze vast amounts of data, equivalent to thousands of text pages or over an hour of video, in a single query.
The Pro model initially accommodates prompt sizes of up to 1 million tokens and is available to subscribers of Google’s Gemini Advanced service. AI Overviews employs generative AI to compile information and tackle complex questions that lack straightforward answers on the internet.
In related news, OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, introduced a new AI model called GPT-4o on Monday. This model enhances ChatGPT by supporting real-time voice responses and the ability to be interrupted, features that are crucial for realistic voice interactions, a challenge that Google Assistant and other AI voice assistants have struggled with.
Following these announcements, Alphabet’s shares saw a slight increase of 0.3% on Tuesday afternoon.
