The home screen layout of Apple devices has remained largely unchanged since the iPhone debuted in 2007, but an upcoming update could introduce an all-new design. While many predict that Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June will heavily focus on artificial intelligence announcements, reports indicate that iOS 18 will also bring significant customization options to users.
According to Bloomberg, iPhone users will soon be able to change the colour of app icons and arrange them freely, departing from the traditional grid pattern Apple is known for. This update could allow users to colour code their home screen, adding a new level of personalization. Currently, some users organize their apps in folders, but iOS 18 promises even more flexibility.
In addition to a revamped home screen, iOS 18 is expected to introduce AI-powered updates to several iPhone apps, as well as new AI-enabled emoji capabilities. By integrating generative AI with its iconic emojis, Apple would enable users to create custom, specialized emojis on the spot.
This year’s WWDC is highly anticipated, especially as Apple aims to catch up with recent AI announcements from competitors like Google and Microsoft. According to Wedbush Securities managing director Dan Ives, this event is poised to be Apple’s “most anticipated event in a decade.”
Apple has yet to comment on these developments, but more details are expected to be revealed at WWDC, which kicks off on June 10.
