Apple’s latest iOS 18.1 developer preview introduces a groundbreaking AI-powered feature that enables users to record and transcribe phone calls, according to a report by MacRumors. This new functionality is accessible to users with the beta version of the software, allowing them to tap a “record” button located in the top-left corner of the call screen to create an audio log of their conversations.
When the recording feature is activated, all participants in the call will hear a notification stating, “This call will be recorded.” The Phone app will then capture everything said during the call, automatically generating a transcription that will be stored in the Notes app. In addition to the transcription, users can access the full audio recording and an AI-generated summary of the call from the Notes app.
Apple first showcased this phone call recording feature during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The functionality promises to be particularly useful for professionals such as journalists who frequently conduct interviews over the phone. It could also be valuable for anyone needing to remember precise details from important calls, such as medical consultations.
Beyond call recording and transcription, iOS 18.1 developer beta includes other notable AI-powered enhancements. These include natural language search capabilities in the Photos app, email summaries in the Mail app, and a refreshed design for Siri. However, users will need to wait a bit longer for a more comprehensive AI-enhanced Siri experience, which Bloomberg reports may be available in 2025.
The addition of these features highlights Apple’s ongoing commitment to integrating advanced AI technologies into its ecosystem, aiming to enhance user experience and productivity across its devices.
