Serbia’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector has shown remarkable growth, with exports of IT services reaching nearly 2 billion euros in the first half of 2024. This represents an 18.84% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, where exports were 1.64 billion euros. Over the last decade, Serbia’s IT service exports have increased tenfold, and the sector is on track to exceed 4 billion euros by the end of this year.
Comparing Serbia’s ICT Sector to the Balkan Region
When compared to its Balkan neighbors, Serbia stands out as a leader in ICT growth. Other Balkan countries such as Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania have made strides in their tech industries, but Serbia’s rapid expansion and strategic investments have distinguished it from the rest.
For instance, Bulgaria has experienced growth in software development and outsourcing, but Serbia’s focus on diversifying its digital services and talent retention has driven more dynamic growth. Croatia is known for its digital competitiveness, particularly in the public sector, yet Serbia’s inclusive approach and significant international partnerships have set it apart. Romania remains a key competitor with its outsourcing industry, but Serbia’s broader digital strategy is giving it an edge.
Moreover, Serbia has made noteworthy progress in gender representation within the tech industry, with a higher-than-average number of women in IT roles compared to other Balkan countries. This focus on inclusivity and innovation further enhances Serbia’s position as a forward-thinking leader in the region.
Serbia’s Future in the Global ICT Market
With ongoing investments in digital infrastructure and a supportive environment for startups, Serbia is not only maintaining its leadership in the Balkans but also positioning itself as a strong competitor on the global stage. As the ICT sector continues to evolve, Serbia’s strategic approach could see it become a major player in the global tech industry.
