Google is enhancing its image search capabilities by introducing the “About this image” tab in both Google Lens and Circle to Search results. Recognizing the frequent use of its services for image-related searches, Google aims to provide even more valuable and informative outputs.
Google Lens and Circle to Search are deeply interconnected. These and other Google services, such as Search, integrate the same AI-powered search algorithms. Some services are essentially extensions of others; for instance, Circle to Search triggers a Lens search, while Lens utilizes the core of Google Search for its results. This shared infrastructure explains why there are common options across these seemingly separate services. Notably, Circle to Search is exclusive to Pixel phones and select Galaxy devices.
Introducing “About This Image” in Google Lens and Circle to Search
Both Google Lens and Circle to Search are now incorporating the “About this image” tab, offering users additional context about the images they search for. This feature, first launched in Google Search in October 2023, has proven particularly useful in detecting AI-generated images, helping users avoid potential scams.
With the addition of the “About this image” tab in Lens and Circle to Search, users can access this feature after the “All,” “Products,” and “Visual Matches” tabs. This new tab provides extensive information, including sites and discussions related to the image, news, articles, metadata, AI-generated labels, and more. According to Google’s blog, the feature supports 40 languages.
Enhanced tools for reporting explicit fake content
Google is also introducing improved tools to combat explicit fake content, such as deepfakes. Users can now report explicit fake content directly from Search. Once content is confirmed to be fake and removed, the system will “filter all explicit results on similar searches about them.” Additionally, websites with multiple pieces of reported and removed content will lose prominence in search results. These enhancements provide users with more robust defenses against misleading and harmful content.
By rolling out these updates, Google continues to refine its user experience, ensuring that people have access to authentic, safe, and informative content.
