Skopje, North Macedonia – In a pioneering move, North Macedonia’s Distribution System Operator (DSO), Elektrodistribucija, has introduced the first interactive map of free capacity for connecting solar power plants to the distribution grid in the Western Balkan region and beyond. This innovative tool is expected to significantly streamline the process for households, businesses, and investors interested in photovoltaic (PV) installations.

The global surge in interest among prosumers and energy suppliers in installing solar power plants underscores the importance of securing grid connections through DSOs. This connection process, although essential, is often complex and time-consuming. The interactive map developed by Elektrodistribucija addresses this challenge by providing clear, real-time information on available grid capacity, thereby simplifying and accelerating the procedure for all parties involved.

A First for the Region

Sasho Saltirovski, Managing Director of Elektrodistribucija DOOEL, part of EVN Group, highlighted the groundbreaking nature of this project in an interview with Balkan Green Energy News. At the time of its development, no other country in the region had a similar tool, making this a regional first. The creation of the map was driven by the desire to make the connection process as simple and interactive as possible, offering immediate, free access to crucial information for potential solar energy developers.

The interactive map aims to minimize the administrative burden on Elektrodistribucija, which often faces time-consuming tasks related to processing grid connection requests. By offering an intuitive, user-friendly platform, the map allows stakeholders to quickly determine the feasibility of connecting their solar projects to the grid, saving time and resources for both the DSO and investors.

Rising Demand and Grid Integration

Elektrodistribucija has already connected PV facilities with a total capacity of 600 MW in recent years, with 230 MW operated by prosumers and 370 MW by producers. The DSO has also issued grid connection approvals for an additional 600 MW in solar projects. This level of interest demonstrates the growing demand for solar energy solutions in North Macedonia.

However, Saltirovski cautioned that the distribution grid’s capacity is nearing its limit, particularly during peak summer months when PV production is highest. With maximum electricity consumption at the distribution level around 700 MW, technical challenges related to the reliability of the grid are becoming more prominent.

Real-Time Data for Informed Decisions

The interactive map serves as a critical tool for potential investors, providing real-time signals on available locations for solar power plant connections. By offering transparent data, the map helps prevent unnecessary expenditures on land purchases and project designs that might not be feasible due to grid limitations.

Saltirovski emphasized that the map’s digitalization and data transparency would not only benefit investors but also reduce the administrative workload for Elektrodistribucija’s employees. This efficiency gain allows the DSO to focus more on expediting the installation of grid connections.

A Technological Milestone

The development of this map is a testament to Elektrodistribucija’s commitment to digital innovation. The DSO’s digital solutions team, utilizing GIS technology, successfully combined geographic functionalities with technical data to produce a highly effective tool for the energy sector.

Efficient Connection Times for Prosumers

For prosumers—individuals or entities that produce and consume electricity—the connection process to Elektrodistribucija’s network is straightforward and fast, typically taking less than 30 days. In cases of greenfield investments that require significant grid upgrades, the connection time can range from several months to a few years, depending on factors such as equipment procurement, permit acquisition, and property rights issues.

Conclusion

As North Macedonia continues to embrace renewable energy, Elektrodistribucija’s interactive map marks a significant advancement in the country’s energy infrastructure. By providing an easy-to-use platform for grid connection information, the DSO is not only fostering the growth of solar energy but also ensuring the sustainable and efficient development of the national power grid.
