Honda has unveiled a new electric vehicle (EV) series named Honda Zero, positioning it as a departure from the current trend of heavy EVs. The company plans to launch its initial model, based on the Saloon concept, in North America in 2026.
Alongside the Saloon, Honda introduced the Space-Hub, both showcasing Honda’s approach to EV development, emphasizing a lightweight and aerodynamic design. The three guiding principles for the Honda Zero series are “thin,” “light,” and “wise.” The company highlights a start-from-scratch engineering approach and a new H-mark logo for its next-gen EVs.
Honda aims to challenge the prevailing trend of larger and heavier EVs, proposing focusing on smaller, slimmer, and more lightweight vehicles. The company has partnered with Sony on the design and development of the Afeela electric car, set to debut in North America by 2026. While Honda has not disclosed the specifics of achieving lightweight EVs, it emphasizes a commitment to a fresh engineering approach.
The Saloon concept features a sleek, fastback design with distinctive rectangular lights resembling a vintage Black & Decker Dustbuster. The interior reflects minimalism, Tron-like lighting accents, a central display, and pixelated wheel covers. The Space-Hub concept, resembling a minivan, incorporates a panoramic moonroof and interior bench seats facing each other, suggesting potential use for an autonomous shuttle service. Future Honda Zero EVs are expected to be both partially and fully autonomous.
Although specific details about the vehicles’ specifications are not provided, Honda mentions using e-Axles for optimum battery efficiency. The Honda Zero series aims to offer a sporty driving experience, drawing inspiration from the automaker’s Formula 1 racing background. The company also plans to integrate AI-powered features in its upcoming vehicles, leveraging driver preferences and location data for personalized experiences and route suggestions.
Honda’s global EV lineup has been limited, with models like the Honda e city car and the Prologue SUV. The company targets the introduction of 30 new EVs by 2030, with 2 million units sold, a goal of 100% zero-emission auto sales by 2040, and carbon neutrality across products and corporate activities by 2050. Despite setbacks, such as cancelling plans for affordable EVs with General Motors, Honda remains committed to advancing its EV offerings.
The Prologue SUV is set to be released in 2026, marking Honda’s significant effort to penetrate the North American electric vehicle market. The distinctive design of the Saloon and Space-Hub concepts reflects Honda’s departure from conventional electric vehicle aesthetics, opting for a unique and attention-grabbing approach.
