Serbia has made a notable impact at Gamescom 2024, showcasing the burgeoning potential of its gaming industry on the global stage. Held in Cologne from August 20 to 25, Gamescom is the world’s largest event dedicated to video games, drawing attention from industry leaders, developers, and gamers alike.
For the second time, Serbia participated in this prestigious event, reflecting the country’s growing prominence in the gaming world. This year, Serbian representation was divided into two key areas of the fair: the business zone and the consumer section.
In the business zone, the Serbian gaming industry was well-represented by the Association of Video Games Industry of Serbia (SGA) and the company Allcorrect. Their focus was on promoting Serbia’s gaming ecosystem and the service side of the industry, highlighting the country’s significant strides in game development and related services.
Meanwhile, in the consumer section, five independent Serbian gaming teams made their mark. Shosha Games, Tricoman Studios, Bohemian Pulp, Studio Bedem, and OOX Limited each showcased their unique games, providing a glimpse into the creativity and innovation emerging from Serbia’s gaming scene.
The impact of the Serbian gaming industry is considerable. According to the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS), the 15 largest domestic gaming companies generated revenue of €175 million last year. Remarkably, over 100 million people worldwide engaged with video games produced in Serbia in 2023.
The sector’s growth is also evident in employment figures. The Serbian gaming industry currently employs more than 4,300 professionals across various fields, with an anticipated need for an additional 475 employees this year to keep pace with the industry’s expansion.
Mihajlo Jovanovic, director of the SGA, emphasized the significance of Serbia’s participation in Gamescom. “Our goal is to showcase the achievements of the Serbian gaming industry on a global platform and to forge new business opportunities,” Jovanovic stated.
Gamescom, along with the Gaming Developer Conference in San Francisco and the Tokyo Game Show in Japan, is one of the three major global events for the gaming industry. Last year’s event attracted 300,000 visitors from over 110 countries and featured 1,200 exhibitors from 53 nations. This year’s participation has further cemented Serbia’s role as an emerging hub of gaming innovation and excellence.
As Serbia continues to gain recognition on the international stage, its presence at Gamescom 2024 underscores the country’s potential and ambition in the global gaming industry.
