Apple has officially announced that iOS 17.4 will be launched in March, bringing with it a slew of enhancements and new features for iPhone users. This update is significant, especially with major updates for the App Store in response to the EU’s regulations, the introduction of transcripts for Apple Podcasts, SharePlay functionality extended to HomePod, an array of new emoji, and preliminary steps for the upcoming next-generation CarPlay.
In a press release, Apple highlighted the importance of adapting to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, ensuring that while it opens up new possibilities for developers within the EU, it also maintains a commitment to safeguarding Apple users and their devices from potential risks. These changes are part of the broader inclusion in the iOS 17.4 update, which users can look forward to starting in March.
Significant App Store revisions for EU users
To align with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, Apple is rolling out comprehensive changes to the App Store. This includes allowing alternative app marketplaces and payment methods, a new default web browser selection screen in Safari, and enabling third-party browsers to use alternative web engines on the iPhone. Additionally, third-party mobile wallet apps will now be able to access the iPhone’s NFC chip for contactless payments within the EU.
Apple podcasts now offer transcripts
Enhancing the listening experience, iOS 17.4 introduces transcripts for Apple Podcasts, enabling users to read along with episodes, search for phrases, and navigate to specific parts of an episode. Transcripts will be generated automatically for new episodes in English, French, German, and Spanish, with plans to retroactively add them to older episodes.
HomePod gains SharePlay music control
SharePlay expands to HomePod with iOS 17.4, allowing users to share music control with family and friends. Through a generated QR code, others can gain access to control what’s playing on a HomePod, enhancing the shared listening experience. This feature builds on a similar capability previously introduced for CarPlay.
A fresh set of emoji
The update introduces a variety of new emoji, including representations like a broken chain, a brown mushroom, and a phoenix, among others, adding more ways for users to express themselves.
CarPlay
iOS 17.4 lays the groundwork for the next generation of CarPlay, with code for eight new apps that enhance integration with vehicle features. These include apps for auto settings, car camera views, charging information for electric vehicles, climate control, door closures and warnings, media control, tyre pressure monitoring, and detailed trip data. Apple anticipates the first U.S. vehicles equipped with this advanced CarPlay functionality to hit the market in 2024.
This comprehensive update underscores Apple’s continuous efforts to innovate and enhance the user experience across its ecosystem, reflecting both regulatory adaptations and user-centric feature enhancements.
