Motorola introduces the latest Razr+ and Razr foldable phones

Fans of folding phones will find plenty to like about Motorola’s latest hardware, the Razr+ and Razr. These updated flip phones share more design elements and boast better specs across the board.

This year’s Motorola Razr+ and Razr appear sharper but feel smoother and softer to hold. While nearly identical in size to their predecessors, the shaping is slightly different. Measuring 3.48 by 2.91 by 0.59 inches closed and 6.50 by 2.91 by 0.28 inches open, the phones weigh 6.67 ounces. They are comfortably compact when closed but somewhat large when opened, akin to a Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The aluminium frame is more curved, creating a seamless profile. Both phones are covered by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on the front, while the rear is available in vegan leather or vegan suede, depending on the color. Motorola claims these materials will endure the phone’s lifetime with minimal wear. The phones have a pleasing texture and ample grip, eliminating the need for a case. The Razr+ comes in Midnight Blue, Spring Green, Peach Fuzz, and Hot Pink, while the Razr is available in Beach Sand, Koala Grey, and Spritz Orange.

A brand-new hinge connects the two halves of the phone. Motorola has reduced the hinge size while increasing its strength, lifespan, and resistance to dust and dirt. Both phones now boast an IPX8 durability rating for water protection, allowing them to sit in 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. This upgrade is essential for the Razr+ to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. The hinge feels robust, making the phone easier to open and close with one hand.

The right edge houses a power button and two separate volume keys. Though slightly thin and sharp, they are easy to find and use, with good travel and feedback. The SIM tray is on the left edge, supporting eSIM as well. The USB-C port is centred on the bottom edge.

One of the joys of modern flip phones is interacting with the outer screen to manage notifications, check the time, and more. Motorola has expanded the outer screens of both Razr phones to enhance functionality.

The outer pOLED screen of the Razr+ measures 4.0 inches and offers 1,272 by 1,080 pixels with a density of 417ppi. It supports HDR10+, 120% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, a refresh rate up to 165Hz, and a peak brightness of 2,400 nits. The inner screen remains 6.9 inches with 2,640 by 1,080 pixels at 413ppi, supporting HDR10+, 10-bit, DCI-P3 color, and a refresh rate up to 165Hz.

The standard Razr outer display has grown to a 3.6-inch screen with 1,056 by 1,066 pixels at 413ppi. It refreshes at 90Hz, has a touch rate of 120Hz, and a peak brightness of 1,700 nits. The inner screen matches the Razr+ in terms of features and peak brightness.

The Razr+ runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor with 12GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The Razr uses a MediaTek Dimensity 7300x processor with 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

Both phones performed well in initial testing, with no speed issues observed. The Razr+ upgrades to a 4,000mAh battery with 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. The Razr retains a 4,000mAh battery with 33W wired and 15W wireless charging.

Both phones support sub-6GHz 5G, Wi-Fi 7 (Razr+), Wi-Fi 6E (Razr), Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and GPS. However, the USB-C ports are limited to USB 2.0.

The Razr+ features a 50MP main camera and a 50MP telephoto camera, while the Razr has a 50MP main camera and a 13MP ultra-wide camera. Both phones can capture 4K60 video.

The Motorola Razr+ and Razr ship with Android 14 and will receive three years of OS upgrades and four years of security patches. Moto AI will bring features like Gemini Nano, generative AI, and improved camera functionality.

The Razr+ will be available for pre-order at AT&T, T-Mobile, Amazon, Best Buy, and Motorola.com starting July 10 and will reach stores on July 24. The Razr will be available for pre-order on July 10 from T-Mobile and will reach various retailers on July 24. The Razr+ is priced at $999.99, and the Razr at $699.99.

Motorola’s latest foldable phones offer enhanced design, better specs, and robust AI integration, making them a strong contender in the foldable phone market.
