The Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) has officially opened applications for the 3rd edition of the Regional Butterfly Innovation Award, inviting young innovators from the Western Balkans to submit their scalable, market-driven solutions. The total award fund amounts to 30,000 EUR, with 6,000 EUR prizes awarded to the best solutions in each of the six categories.
As in previous years, applicants can apply for up to two of the following categories:
- Industry Innovation (automotive, metal-processing, creative industries, agrofood, green and circular economy, tourism, FinTech, EdTech, BioTech, HealthTech, etc.)
- Green Innovation (climate action, sustainable energy, mobility & agriculture, pollution reduction, biodiversity protection, etc.)
- STEM Innovation (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)
- Youth Innovation (for undergraduate university or high school students)
- University Innovation (promoting entrepreneurial culture in universities)
- Women Innovation (recognizing women innovators and entrepreneurs)
Eligible participants must be individuals or teams where the majority of members are under 35 years old (average team age must not exceed 35). The proposed innovative solutions must demonstrate a tangible impact within the Western Balkans.

The Butterfly Innovation Award aims to support the economic development of the Western Balkans by promoting digital transformation, fostering environmental sustainability, and encouraging a culture of innovation. The award also seeks to empower youth and women, particularly from underrepresented groups.

The application process is open until 10 October 2024, with winners to be announced in November 2024. The Regional Butterfly Innovation Award is funded by the European Union and implemented by the RCC as part of the Common Regional Market Action Plan for the Western Balkans.
