At its annual Unpacked event in Paris, Samsung introduced its newest generation of foldable phones, smart ring, and earbuds, marking significant advancements in artificial intelligence integration. The event highlighted the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, aiming to attract traditional phone users with innovative AI tools.
Advanced foldable phones
The new foldable phones, Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, are designed to be lighter, slimmer, and packed with AI features. The Galaxy Z Fold 6, starting at $1,899.99, and the Galaxy Z Flip 6, starting at $1,099.99, boast a more durable hinge, better battery life, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor optimized for AI processing.
Samsung’s foldables have a competitive edge with AI-powered features such as the Note Assist, which enables transcription, translation, and summarizing of voice recordings directly in Notes, and live translation for phone calls. The Composer feature in the Samsung Keyboard suggests text based on keywords for email and social media apps, reflecting users’ tones by analyzing previous posts.
Google’s AI assistant Gemini is integrated into the phones, assisting with writing and web searches. Other notable features include circle to search and image options based on sketches when using Samsung’s S Pen stylus.
Enhanced User Experience
Both devices now feature a larger screen for enhanced productivity. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a 6.3-inch cover screen, up from 6.2 inches, and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 features a new 3.4-inch Super AMOLED screen and an advanced camera system with a 50MP wide lens and 12MP ultra-wide sensors.
David McQueen, a research director at ABI Research, highlighted the potential of foldable displays in other mobile products, such as tablets, laptops, and smartwatches. Despite the improvements, McQueen noted the challenge of convincing consumers of the benefits of foldable devices, which currently account for less than 3% of total shipments.
Samsung’s TM Roh emphasized the role of AI in keeping its foldable line a market leader. The company’s Galaxy AI software aims to enhance user experience and productivity. Samsung’s hybrid approach to privacy allows users to choose between on-device AI for greater privacy and cloud-based AI for higher performance.
Introducing the Galaxy Ring
Samsung also unveiled more details about its upcoming smart ring, a device packed with sensors for health monitoring. The ring, priced at $399.99, tracks temperature, sleep, and provides personalized insights. Available in black, silver, and gold, the smart ring competes with market leader Oura and is expected to appeal to consumers as a less intrusive alternative to smartwatches.
New Galaxy Buds 3
The event also showcased the Galaxy Buds 3, priced at $179.99. These earbuds include an interpreter mode for real-time translation during lectures or meetings and new control functions for music playback without physical touch. Available in white and silver, the Galaxy Buds 3 promise a seamless listening experience with enhanced AI capabilities.
Market Impact
Samsung’s strategic integration of AI and the introduction of advanced features in its latest devices underscore the company’s commitment to innovation and user experience. As the market for foldable phones and smart wearables grows, Samsung aims to stay ahead by continually enhancing its product lineup with cutting-edge technology.
