The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia has launched the EU Horizon international research project ARTIFACT (Artificial Intelligence for Flood Resilient Infrastructure), aiming to enhance flood prediction and urban resilience through advanced AI technologies. In collaboration with prestigious European institutions such as the Technology University Delft, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, and the Technical University of Hamburg, the project seeks to create innovative solutions for flood management and infrastructure resilience.
At the introductory meeting, Prof. Dr. Dubravko Ćulibrk, Acting Director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia, highlighted the project’s significance for both the Institute and Serbia:
“The ARTIFACT project is a significant step forward not only for the Institute but also for Serbia. Cooperating with leading European institutions strengthens our research capacities and opens new possibilities for applying artificial intelligence to address complex environmental and infrastructure challenges. Our vision is to become a center of excellence for green AI technologies in smart cities, bridging science and innovation with community needs.”
The ARTIFACT project introduces cutting-edge AI models that surpass traditional methods reliant on physical principles, enabling more precise predictions for extreme weather events and equipping communities with faster, more effective responses. Dr. Milan Stojković, head of the “Green AI” research group at the Institute, added:
“The goal of ARTIFACT is to improve the resilience of urban infrastructure against floods by applying AI and nature-inspired solutions. Our primary ambition is to develop advanced tools for accurate flood prediction and management, positioning the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia as a regional leader in AI-driven water engineering. Among the project’s challenges is the local adaptation of innovations to specific climate and infrastructure requirements, supported through cooperation with the IT sector and academic community.”
Collaboration Between AI Experts from Serbia, the Netherlands, and Germany
During the meeting, European partner representatives shared their support and insights. Prof. Zoran Capello, PhD, Head of the Urban Water Supply Infrastructure Group at Delft’s Faculty of Technology, emphasized:
“Flooding is a major issue globally, and we believe artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in future flood risk management. We are pleased to participate in ARTIFACT, addressing the challenges of real flood situations while exchanging knowledge with our project partners.”
Prof. Dr. Nataša Manojlović from the Technical University of Hamburg echoed this sentiment, saying:
“ARTIFACT is an excellent opportunity to establish long-term collaborations with Serbian institutions, working together on scientific research in flood management through AI and nature-inspired technical solutions. I am thrilled to contribute my expertise and connections developed at the Technical University of Hamburg to Serbia’s scientific infrastructure in these vital areas.”
Advancing Flood Resilience with Interdisciplinary Expertise
The ARTIFACT project fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among engineers and AI experts from Serbia, the Netherlands, and Germany to create sustainable, efficient, and long-term flood protection systems. By leading this initiative, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia reaffirms its dedication to innovative research with a positive impact on the environment and society.
The project represents a pivotal development for AI-powered infrastructure resilience, positioning Serbia as a regional leader in flood management solutions and green AI technologies for smart cities.
