Tags, a variation of hashtags with a unique approach, have now been globally introduced on Threads, as revealed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Thursday.
Differing from traditional hashtags on platforms like Instagram and X (previously Twitter), Threads’ tags operate with a distinct functionality. When crafting a Threads post, initiating a tag involves tapping the # symbol and then typing out the desired topic. Notably, unlike traditional hashtags limited to a single word, Threads allows users to compose an entire phrase, including spaces and special characters. However, it’s important to note that only one tag can be applied per post.
While the mechanism of tags on Threads diverges slightly, their purpose aligns with that of hashtags. According to Mosseri, “If you share on Threads, [tags are] a great way to help connect with people who are interested in the topics you’re talking about.” He emphasizes that, for everyone, tags serve as an effective means to delve deeper into one’s interests.
Meta’s approach, including the single-tag limit, is viewed positively as a strategic measure to prevent excessive hashtag spam. However, the success of tags depends on user adoption, and only time will reveal if they become a valuable tool for discovering and participating in conversations on specific topics. Meta initially tested tags with users in Australia starting in November.
