TikTok is set to unveil a new photo-sharing platform poised to challenge Instagram. Users received a notification indicating the introduction of “a new app for photo posts” named TikTok Notes, as initially reported by TechCrunch.
According to the notification, TikTok Notes will incorporate “existing and future public TikTok photo posts” while providing users with the choice to opt out. A briefly visible photo.tiktok.com URL (archived version) discovered by TechCrunch hinted at the app, showing a user interface where captions can be added to photos.
TikTok commented to TechCrunch, stating it is “exploring ways to empower our community to create and share their creativity with photos and text in a dedicated space for those formats,” though the release timeline for the app remains unspecified.
Rumours about TikTok’s venture into photo sharing emerged last month following TheSpAndroid‘s report, which uncovered evidence of an app named TikTok Photos in development.
With its forthcoming launch, TikTok Notes appears poised to become a formidable rival to Instagram. Leveraging the plethora of photos already shared by its users—assuming most opt-in—TikTok Notes is set to bypass the challenge of building an initial user base.
