WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature aimed at enhancing user connectivity by allowing voice notes to be converted into text. This would enable users to grasp the message’s context without the need to play the audio. This functionality is seen as particularly beneficial in various situations and for younger audiences. It’s reported that this feature will be accessible to both iOS and Android users.
According to a WaBetainfo report, this feature is designed to offer an alternative communication method, especially for those who may find it difficult to listen to audio messages or prefer text over voice notes. Initially tested on iOS, WhatsApp has begun trials of this feature for Android users as well.
The latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android includes the capability to transcribe voice messages into text without having to play them. This is made possible through on-device speech recognition technology, ensuring that end-to-end encryption is maintained.
To utilize this feature once it becomes widely available, users will need to download an additional 150 MB of program data. The feature will then be automatically enabled, though there might be instances where manual activation is necessary. Users will be notified to read the transcript of a message before listening to it, providing them with the option to view the message’s content in text form.
The report indicates that this feature is currently in the testing phase and has been made available to a select group of beta testers. It is expected that WhatsApp will extend access to this transcription tool to more users in the coming week.
