Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is wading into the world of adult content. As spotted by TechCrunch, X updated its guidelines to allow users to share “consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behaviour” with limitations. This move comes after a decline in ad revenue following Elon Musk’s takeover and X’s search for new income streams.
Clearer rules and potential profits
While X never explicitly banned pornography before, the new policy offers more clarity and transparency. The platform replaces its prior “Sensitive Media” and “Violent Speech” policies with specific “Adult Content” and “Violent Content” guidelines. Importantly, X assures users that the core principles remain unchanged – it’s the enforcement approach that’s evolving.
The foray into adult content isn’t purely about user expression. X, facing a drop in ad revenue, sees NSFW content as a potential revenue generator. Following the model of Twitter Blue (now X Premium), creators could mark their content as adult-only and charge users for access, similar to platforms like OnlyFans.
Challenges and concern
However, monetization comes with challenges. Enforcing the new guidelines effectively is a concern. In January, X struggled to contain the spread of explicit AI-generated images, raising questions about its ability to manage a wider influx of NSFW content.
X isn’t the first platform to grapple with NSFW content. Tumblr’s 2018 ban on adult content led to a significant drop in users, highlighting the potential downside of stricter regulations. Additionally, payment processors cracking down on adult platforms like Pornhub demonstrate the potential for financial constraints.
Balancing growth with user safety
Despite these concerns, X is pushing forward with a measured approach. Users who regularly post adult content must mark it as sensitive, and the platform prohibits content promoting exploitation or harm to minors. By default, unverified users or those under 18 cannot access NSFW content.
Only time will tell if X’s gamble on adult content pays off. The platform must navigate the delicate balance between attracting creators and users with looser regulations while ensuring user safety and avoiding the pitfalls faced by other platforms. X’s success hinges on its ability to enforce its rules effectively and foster a safe, engaging environment for all users.
