Gocycle, the esteemed British e-bike manufacturer known for its innovative designs and the brainchild of a former McLaren automotive designer, recently unveiled its latest creation aimed at modern families: a cutting-edge electric cargo bike. This addition to the CX series embodies the brand’s hallmark of lightweight and foldable designs, introducing a revolutionary handlebar on the CX Plus model designed for unparalleled rider comfort.
Dubbed “Flofit” by Gocycle, this new handlebar system is touted as a groundbreaking development in the realm of e-bike ergonomics. “Adjustable in reach, grip angle, offering multiple hand positions, and of course foldable — it’s a game-changer for discerning urban e-bikers,” proclaimed Richard Thorpe, Gocycle’s founder and designer, emphasizing its potential to redefine user comfort in electric biking.
While the excitement around the CX series is palpable, scepticism remains due to the absence of tangible models, with only image renders currently available for public viewing. Despite this, Gocycle’s reputation for delivering premium, innovative e-bikes since 2009 lends credibility to its latest venture. The company has a history of producing e-bikes that boast fast folding capabilities, integrated lighting, sleek cable routing, and a minimalist display, all without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.
The newly announced CX cargo e-bike stands out not only for its innovative handlebars but also for its impressive weight capacity. Weighing in at a mere 23kg (51 pounds), it remarkably supports up to 220kg (485 pounds) of combined weight, including the rider, passengers, and cargo. This is a significant feat when compared to competitors like the Rad Power RadWagon, which is heavier and has a lower weight limit but offers a larger battery and more powerful motor at a lower price point.
Additionally, the CX series boasts a stylish rear wooden deck, available in either cherry or teak, compatible with a range of MIK accessories, enhancing its utility for family use. From child seats and pet carriers to panniers, and even an F1-inspired safety halo system, the CX and CX Plus models are designed to cater to the diverse needs of urban families.
Technical specifications of the CX series reveal a blend of high-quality materials and advanced features, including an alloy and carbon fibre frame, a carbon fibre wheel and fork, and a 375Wh removable battery that promises up to 80km (50 miles) of range. The bikes are equipped with a 500W motor in the US, capable of reaching speeds of up to 20mph, while the European models adhere to the standard 250W motor and 25km/h speed limit. Safety and performance are further enhanced by hydraulic disk brakes and a sophisticated transmission system featuring a torque sensor, a five-speed Shimano Nexus hub, and a Gates CDX carbon belt drive.
Despite their high-end features, the CX series comes with a premium price tag, reflecting Gocycle’s commitment to innovation and quality over competing prices. Preorders for the CXi model start at £5,999, with the CX Plus model priced at £6,999, and deliveries expected to commence in September.
In reflecting on the challenges faced by the e-bike industry, including the recent market turbulence and the shift away from investor-driven growth, Thorpe remains optimistic about the future. He notes the resilience of Gocycle amidst these trials, emphasizing the brand’s dedication to value innovation, thoughtful design, and exceptional customer service. As the market stabilizes, Thorpe anticipates a renewed appreciation for innovation and quality among urban e-bike consumers and dealers, moving beyond the era of relentless discounting.
