Tesla is set to incorporate Elon Musk’s recently introduced Grok AI assistant into its electric vehicles. Earlier in the year, Musk launched a new AI startup called xAI, which was slated to collaborate closely with Tesla. While the startup’s overarching mission is “to understand the true nature of the universe,” its initial project involves creating a chatbot or AI assistant similar to ChatGPT.
The chatbot, known as Grok AI, is described by xAI as an AI modelled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, designed to provide answers and even suggest questions with a touch of humour and a rebellious streak. It is expected to be available on social media platforms via a premium subscription service, utilizing data from xAI.
Regarding Tesla, a beta tester named Brian Roemmele mentioned that a “smaller quantized” version of Grok would run natively in Tesla vehicles, utilizing the vehicles’ local computing power. Musk acknowledged this report and emphasized that Tesla could potentially have a substantial amount of usable inference computing power, particularly in a future with robotaxis where vehicles are primarily used for a fraction of their available time.
Tesla has been increasingly focused on voice commands within its vehicles, and integrating an AI assistant into the vehicle aligns with this approach. Musk’s goal is to have Tesla vehicles anticipate the owner’s needs and proactively address them.
While there’s no official timeline for the integration of Grok AI into Tesla vehicles, early beta access is being made available to some xAI users, with plans to expand its availability further.
