The iPhone may get a big dose of AI this year

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have long been integral to the iPhone, powering features like Portrait Mode for the camera and text extraction from photos. However, at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, there’s anticipation surrounding the potential integration of generative AI into the iPhone.

Apple’s expected iOS 18 update will likely bring a bunch of new AI features, according to reports

Generative AI, which involves AI models generating content based on prompts, has gained significant traction following the success of ChatGPT. Major tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, Samsung, and Amazon have already incorporated generative AI into their flagship products. While Apple has remained relatively quiet about its plans for generative AI, CEO Tim Cook hinted at updates for 2024 during the company’s recent earnings call.

Cook’s remarks, combined with new research papers and AI startup acquisitions, suggest that Apple is exploring the realm of generative AI. Reports suggest that iOS 18, the next major iteration of the iPhone operating system, could introduce numerous AI features. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, is reportedly spearheading the integration of AI-driven tools into iOS, potentially enhancing functionalities in the Messages app and Siri. However, there’s no indication of an Apple alternative to ChatGPT being in the works.

Google’s Gemini model may power some upcoming iPhone features, according to reports

Other tech giants like Samsung and Google have already demonstrated how generative AI can transform smartphones, offering features such as tone-altering text message rewriting and intelligent photo editing. Apple might adopt a similar approach with iOS 18, although specific details remain undisclosed.

There are reports suggesting that Apple is in discussions with Google and OpenAI to leverage their AI models for upcoming iPhone features, particularly those requiring cloud processing. However, Apple is also reportedly developing its own on-device AI models for enhanced privacy and security. This aligns with Apple’s strategy of tightly integrating hardware and software to deliver seamless user experiences.

Siri may get a performance boost

Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, is a prime candidate for AI advancements. Reports indicate that Apple is focusing on enhancing Siri’s automation capabilities, potentially enabling tasks like creating GIFs from photos through voice commands.

Additionally, there’s speculation about a new AI-focused section in the App Store, allowing users to discover and purchase AI-powered apps. This move would underscore Apple’s commitment to advancing AI technologies and their accessibility to users across its product ecosystem.

Apple’s A17 Pro chip, which powers the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max

Furthermore, Apple’s upcoming iPhone processor, likely to be named the A18, is expected to deliver improved AI performance. Given Apple’s emphasis on local AI processing, significant upgrades to the neural engine inside A-series chips are anticipated.

While Apple may not always be the first to introduce new technologies, it has a track record of popularizing them. The integration of AI and generative AI into the iPhone could mark another milestone in Apple’s legacy of innovation and user-centric design.
