OpenAI’s DALL-E is receiving a couple of upgrades today aimed at enhancing your ability to shape AI-generated creations. Firstly, image editing tools are now available when using DALL-E within ChatGPT, both on the web and on mobile. Secondly, DALL-E now provides preset style suggestions to inspire image creation, akin to Android’s AI-generated wallpaper prompts. After all, how else could you imagine a sci-fi polar bear on vacation?
DALL-E is currently in its third generation, and recent updates like these appear to focus on improving user-friendliness. DALL-E 3 introduced integration with ChatGPT, relieving users of the need to craft a perfectly descriptive image prompt — simply convey what you want to ChatGPT, and it will handle the rest. Today’s update builds upon this, allowing even casual DALL-E users to adjust and refine their results directly within the ChatGPT interface.
The new style prompts in DALL-E 3 seem to address a similar but slightly different question from inexperienced users: how do I get started with this tool? Sometimes, a blank canvas can be a bit daunting. These new prompts serve as a starting point, offering styles such as woodcut, gothic, synthwave, and hand-drawn, accompanied by examples as you hover over them. Selecting one adds it to your prompt, leaving the creative part up to you. So, in terms of creativity, you’re not completely off the hook.
OpenAI has also recently focused on addressing a more immediate concern related to AI-generated image creation: trust. Earlier this year, DALL-E 3 began adding visible watermarks and metadata to denote AI-generated images. While a step in the right direction, both can be easily removed by malicious actors. This is a challenge not only for OpenAI but for the broader community as well. In the meantime, let’s hope that sci-fi polar bear enjoys its vacation.
