The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) has successfully partnered with the Government of Kosovo to train and equip the Kosovo Security Forces (KSF) to effectively prepare for and respond to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) events. This collaboration represents a significant milestone in enhancing Kosovo’s capabilities to address potential CBRN threats.
From June 3-7, 2024, a DTRA Building Partner Capacity team traveled to Kosovo to conduct a Counter Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) field training exercise with the KSF Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Company. This exercise marked the culmination of a multi-year security initiative aimed at training and equipping Kosovo’s first responders to operate as a regional response team that aligns with NATO standards.
During the field training exercise, the HAZMAT Company demonstrated its ability to respond to CBRN incidents in coordination with other Kosovo interagency partners. Participants were challenged with simulated Counter WMD scenarios, which tested their capacity to work as a cohesive unit. The exercise validated the KSF’s proficiency in applying the counter WMD tactics, techniques, and procedures they have learned through DTRA’s comprehensive training program.
This initiative underscores the importance of building regional security capabilities and fostering interoperability between Kosovo’s first responders and NATO forces. The successful completion of this training equips Kosovo’s HAZMAT teams with the necessary skills to effectively respond to CBRN threats, ensuring greater safety and security in the region.
