For the first time, the Albanian community in Montenegro now has access to an audio library in the Albanian language, aimed at promoting reading and education. This initiative, which began functioning recently, is designed to reach a broad audience, particularly those with visual impairments, offering them a new way to engage with literature. The project is not only about accessibility but also aims to preserve and promote the Albanian language and culture, encouraging youth and adults alike to explore the world of books.
A Resource for Albanians in Montenegro and Beyond
The brainchild of Luljeta Avdiu Cura, the audio library, titled “Albanian Audio Works”, features audio books by Albanian authors from Montenegro, with plans to expand to include regional authors. This project marks an important step for the Albanian community in Montenegro as it seeks to foster a connection to Albanian literature and heritage. According to Cura, “The purpose of this project is to educate young men and women within the country, but it is also dedicated to compatriots who are raising and educating children in the diaspora.”
Preserving the Albanian Language and Culture
A key goal of the project is to maintain the Albanian language and cultural identity, particularly at a time when reading traditional books has become less common among younger generations. Cura explained that the constant access to technology has diminished the desire to read in the traditional sense, but she hopes that the audio format will attract more young people. “The desire of the younger generation to read a book in the traditional form has been lost, and this fact enabled the audio library, believing that curiosity will lead them to listen to books of this genre,” she said.
An Inclusive Project with Broad Support
Cura also emphasized that the project is not just for today but for the long term. She hopes it will continue to grow with the backing of institutions such as the Fund of Minorities of Montenegro and other supporters of literary initiatives. “This is a project that has no end, and I hope it will be continuously supported by the Fund of Minorities of Montenegro or even by other institutions that value the written word,” said Cura.
A New Avenue for Learning
The value of reading in personal and educational development is undeniable, and audio books provide a modern way to access knowledge. As Cura noted, this is especially beneficial for individuals with visual impairments, but it also caters to those who prefer to listen to content while multitasking. The audio library offers a new form of engagement with Albanian literature, fostering a deeper connection to language and culture, and broadening the educational possibilities for the Albanian community in Montenegro and beyond.
The project is expected to continue expanding and playing a vital role in preserving the Albanian cultural heritage while offering a more accessible platform for education.
