The Google Gemini mobile app made its debut in the US last week, with plans for a gradual rollout to other regions. While the initial focus has been on smartphones, there’s been speculation about Google expanding Gemini support to other devices, such as earbuds and headphones. Recent evidence from the latest beta version of the Google app (v15.6) suggests that Assistant-powered headphones could indeed be next in line to receive Gemini support.
A string discovered within the beta version of the Google app alludes to the imminent arrival of Gemini on headphones. As noted by 9to5Google, the versatility of earbuds and headphones, with the paired smartphone as a backup, makes them ideal candidates for Gemini trials. The string from the support page emphasizes that various non-mobile devices, including Smart Displays, Pixel Tablets, speakers, and smartwatches, along with headphones and earbuds equipped with Google Assistant, will continue to be compatible with Gemini.
While this discovery hints at Gemini expanding to headphones, there are anticipated challenges, particularly with an audio-only interface. Users might face difficulties with long responses to queries. Moreover, despite the potential expansion to headphones, Gemini still lacks some features of Google Assistant, which may affect users who rely on it for tasks, reminders, or playing podcasts.
Despite being in its early stages, Google is already taking steps to refine Gemini based on user feedback. While the initial rollout faced some branding confusion, the early days of Gemini have shown promise, although there’s room for improvement.
